Digital identity project Worldcoin, now World Network, or World for short, in May 2024, reiterated that its Orb software is open source. In simple words, developers from other projects and firms can use it without major impediments. Since then, several important updates and additions have been made.
Regarding the name change, World stated: “As the scale of the project grows alongside the importance of World ID’s human proof protocol, the name ‘Worldcoin’ no longer encapsulates the mission of the project, which is to accelerate the progress of each human being. With its three key pillars (World Chain, World ID and Worldcoin), World is truly a network of real, verified humans, built to enable an optimistic future where humans will continue to be at the center of AI progress. .
Orb evolves: Open source updated with new features
Certainly, the core of Orb, orb-core, has been enhanced with new functionalities, among which stand out:
Open source OTA system for secure and reliable updates
For its part, the Orb has a custom system for performing over-the-air (OTA) updates, which is now open source. This system allows the entire Orb fleet to be updated safely and reliably, and includes support for auditing the software on each individual Orb. Particularly, OTA updates consist of:
- An OTA update agent, to download and install signed updates.
- An update checker, to confirm the success of an OTA.
- Supervisor, to coordinate the status of the system.
Finally, from World, Orb-core is expected to move to open development soon, like the other components of Orb-software. Likewise, the teams working on the Orb software are working to open source the Orb operating system build system and various security-related components.
