Parallel is an Ethereum-based card game that was named GG’s Best Crypto Game of 2023. This year, the game launched on the Epic Games store to 75 million monthly active users as it began its push into esports. Parallel offers players optional NFT trading cards, but they are not required to play.
This came in the form of the Parallel League, a six-month competitive league where players fight to earn points through in-game tournaments, ladder matches, major tournaments, and more. The Parallel Championship is scheduled to be the final event in this series of events.
The top eight Parallel players will battle it out at the 650-seat HyperX Arena in Las Vegas. There is $250,000 at stake, with the winner taking home $100,000. Another $250,000 in total will be awarded to winners of major and minor tournaments throughout the ongoing Parallel League leading up to the finals.
Since opening in 2018, HyperX Arena has gradually gained a reputation as one of the key esports venues in the US, hosting hundreds of events, including the League of Legends All-Star Match in 2019.
“Our goal is to create the best esports scene in the world of collectible card games. Bringing the championship to HyperX is a big step in that direction,” said Sascha Mojtahedi, co-founder and CEO of Parallel Studios, in a statement provided exclusively to GG from Decrypt.
Several Cryptocurrency games have ventured into the world of esports, hoping to strengthen their respective competitive gaming communities.
This includes Solana shooter Nyan Heroes and 4v4 Sparkball joining forces with esports giants to promote the launch of their respective games, as well as Ethereum card game Apeiron hosting a $1 million esports championship .
Earlier this year, a number of well-known players of Hearthstone—the most popular collectible card video game—joined Parallel’s ambassador program.
Among them, Thijs Molendijk, an e-sports professional and well-known Hearthstone streamer, stands out especially, who announced that he would be supporting the cryptocurrency game. Molendijk took to Twitter to explain that Blockchain helps recreate the trading element of physical card games that Web2 games don’t offer, as the assets are locked within their own walled gardens.
But some Hearthstone fans weren’t happy, calling him a “sellout” and saying he has damaged their reputation. Thijs has since become an ambassador for Ubisoft’s recently released NFT game Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles and has continued to advocate for blockchain gaming.
Despite some criticism from players, Parallel has clearly set its sights on being taken seriously in the esports world, and a $250,000 live championship is the next step.
