Microsoft announced at its Ignite 2024 Conference that, in early 2025, Teams will add an AI-powered “translator” feature. This tool will allow meeting participants to speak or listen in the language of their preference, making communication more efficient and taking productivity to the next level.
By the way, Microsoft Teams is a collaboration app built for hybrid work to keep you and your team informed, organized, and connected, all in one place.
Now, imagine being able to participate in a meeting with colleagues from all over the world without worrying about language barriers. Microsoft lets you make this vision a reality with its new voice cloning feature that can also translate your voice in real time into nine languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. However, in the future, they also promise to add multilingual meeting transcripts with support for more than 31 languages.
In this regard, Jared Spataro, Microsoft’s marketing director, wrote: «Imagine being able to speak like you in another language. “The Teams Interpretation Agent provides real-time voice-to-speech interpretation during meetings, and you can choose to have it simulate your speaking voice for a more personal and engaging experience.”
By the way, although Microsoft gave few concrete details about the feature, it said that the voice cloning tool does not store biometric data, meaning your personal information is protected. Together, the AI only reproduces the feelings that are already present in your voice, avoiding any emotional manipulation. And if you want to disable this feature, you can easily do so from Teams settings.
The future of virtual meetings: Microsoft allows you to clone your voice in Teams
According to a Microsoft spokesperson: “The feature will reproduce the speaker’s message as accurately as possible, without adding assumptions or extraneous information. Voice simulation can only be enabled if users consent via in-meeting notifications or by turning on Voice Simulation Consent in settings.
Very importantly, the translator will be available in preview only for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
In addition to cloning your voice and translating in real time, Copilot in Teams is designed to increase your productivity. This AI will be able to “understand and repeat” any visual content shared during a meeting, whether it is a PowerPoint presentation or an image from the web.
Additionally, Copilot will give you concise summaries of files shared in chats, saving you time and effort searching for key information.
Among other new features, Microsoft is also using Copilot Plus PCs to enable a Teams Super Resolution feature that takes advantage of the local NPU chip to improve the quality of video calls. And starting in January, Windows app developers will be able to use similar super-resolution APIs to improve blurry images.
I say goodbye with this quote from Diane Ackerman: “Artificial Intelligence is growing rapidly, as are robots, whose facial expressions can provoke empathy and make your mirror neurons tremble.”
