It’s the season of giving, and Make-A-Wish International has called on cryptocurrency holders to empty their pockets for a good cause.
The children’s charity has launched an appeal for cryptocurrency holders to donate, after Bitcoin hit new all-time highs over the past month.
“Supporting charitable initiatives with cryptocurrency sends the message that the crypto ecosystem has a purpose beyond financial gains: they can change lives and create significant social impact,” said Luciano Manzo, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish International, in a statement.
The charity helps grant the wishes of children diagnosed with critical illnesses in 50 countries around the world, from meeting a famous person to going to Disneyland. They claim to have granted 585,000 wishes since their creation in 1980.
Make-A-Wish International opened its doors to cryptocurrency donations three years ago with the help of The Giving Block, an organization that allows nonprofits to receive cryptocurrency donations.
The charity accepts donations in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC through its website, and claims that three years of cryptocurrency donations have helped bring Make-A-Wish to three new unnamed countries.
Cryptocurrencies and charity
It has taken some time for charities to embrace the idea of receiving donations in cryptocurrency. Last year, the UK Charity Commission published guidance warning organizations about the risks of accepting donations in cryptocurrency, citing the volatility of the tokens, potential fraud, legal ambiguity, and more.
However, it appears that more charities are embracing the idea, with Make-a-Wish International being one of several charities and non-profits now accepting cryptocurrency.
“Cryptocurrencies present the greatest intersection of wealth, youth and motivation to give,” Pat Duffy, co-founder of The Giving Block, said in a statement. “With 600 million users globally and trillions of dollars invested, nonprofits that don’t take advantage of this movement risk being left behind.”
Last month, charity platform JustGiving added support for donations in Bitcoin and Dogecoin, while Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors Without Borders) launched a new initiative allowing users to share part of their staking rewards with the organization. charity, using the Ethereum staking protocol, Lido.
Stake2Care launched in October and has since received an advertising grant from the Lido Ecosystem Grants Organization.
Other causes have benefited from the generosity of cryptocurrency holders; Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the country was able to raise $50 million through 90,000 separate donations in less than a week, prompting Ukrainian media to push for the launch of NFTs.
