- On Wednesday night, ChatGPT experienced an outage, causing connection difficulties and API errors, impacting users.
- OpenAI recognized the issue on X and quickly worked on a fix to restore service, which affected both ChatGPT and Sora.
- This was not ChatGPT’s first outage, as the platform had major outages on November 8 and December 4, 2024.
There was a major disruption on the force on Wednesday night when ChatGPT went down, causing university students to suddenly scream in terror.
While not necessarily on par with the destruction of Alderaan by the Death Star in A New Hope, the number one AI chatbot’s downtime came as a surprise following an Apple announcement on the same day that the ChatGPT support had come to Siri.
OpenAI and Apple did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s request for comment.

“We are experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to implement a fix,” OpenAI said on X, acknowledging the situation. “We’re sorry and we’ll keep you updated!”
According to the OpenAI status page, ChatGPT started experiencing connection issues at 6:17 pm EST. At 6:54 pm EST, OpenAI posted its first update, citing the ChatGPT API as the likely source of the issue.
“We have reports of API calls returning errors and difficulties logging in to platform.openai.com and ChatGPT,” OpenAI said. “We have identified the issue and are working to implement a solution.”
At 7:24 p.m. EST, OpenAI said it had started working on resolving the issue; however, ChatGPT and the recently released Sora AI video generator remained down.
“ChatGPT, Sora and the API are still down,” OpenAI said. “We have identified the issue and are implementing a solution. We are working as quickly as possible to restore service to normal and apologize for the downtime.”
This wasn’t the first time ChatGPT’s servers went down in the last three months.
The data shows that the platform experienced a major outage on November 8 and then again on December 4, with both outages lasting about an hour and a half.
