The alleged killer of UnitedHealth Group CEO Brian Thompson is now in the same prison as Cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried.
Luigi Mangione arrived in New York to be held at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, the Federal Bureau of Prisons website shows, following numerous media reports pointing to his fate.
That jail is the same place where former FTX boss Bankman-Fried is serving a 25-year sentence for his role in the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange.
And they’re not the only high-profile inmates: In September it was reported that music super-producer Sean “Diddy” Combs was also being held at the same detention center on charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking.
Combs reportedly shared space with Bankman-Fried, and subsequent court documents showed that the rap producer and actor had hired one of the disgraced cryptocurrency businessman’s lawyers.
FTX was one of the largest companies in the crypto ecosystem that allowed users to buy, sell and bet on the price of digital coins and tokens. But it quickly filed for bankruptcy in November 2022—leading to the loss of billions of dollars—due to criminal mismanagement by Bankman-Fried and her team.
Prosecutors on Thursday charged Mangione, 26, with murder as the prime suspect in the slaying of health insurance executive Thompson.
The corporate executive was shot to death on December 4 in New York City, with the public murder and subsequent search dominating news headlines. The feds arrested Mangione days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Prosecutors say Mangione planned the attack for months because of his disdain for the American healthcare industry.
