Politician and activist Bernard “Bernie” Sanders, the senior US senator from Vermont, endorsed the newly planned Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in its attempt to reduce the Pentagon budget. In fact, the senator has long advocated for greater scrutiny of the national defense budget.
Recall that, shortly after winning the elections, Donald Trump announced that Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy would be co-directors of DOGE, until their work concludes on July 4, 2026.
DOGE is an external organization and not a government department that will be responsible for coordinating with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to eradicate waste.
Now, Elon Musk, along with Vivek Ramaswamy, have strongly defended efforts to limit federal spending amid a budget deficit. And in a Wall Street Journal article, he pointed out the Pentagon’s seven consecutive failed audits.
Specifically, the article reads: “Critics maintain that we cannot significantly reduce the federal deficit without targeting entitlement programs, which require Congress to reduce them. But this diverts attention from the magnitude of waste, fraud and abuse that almost all taxpayers want to eliminate, and that DOGE aims to address by identifying precise executive actions that would result in immediate savings for taxpayers.
As a fun fact, DOGE put out a call for “super-high IQ government revolutionaries willing to work 80+ hours a week on unglamorous cost cuts.” Musk and Ramaswamy will evaluate the top 1% of applicants for employee positions on the commission.
We are very grateful to the thousands of Americans who have expressed interest in helping us at DOGE. We don’t need more part-time idea generators. We need super high-IQ small-government revolutionaries willing to work 80+ hours per week on unglamorous cost-cutting. If that’s…

The solution to DOGE’s problems? Cuts, according to Bernie Sanders
It is worth noting that Senator Bernie Sanders, known for his harsh criticism of Elon Musk on issues such as inequality and space exploration, has surprised everyone by aligning himself with the magnate, suggesting that greater responsibility is urgently needed in the Department of Defense .
So, in a post, he stated: “Elon Musk is right. The Pentagon, with a budget of $886 billion, just suspended its seventh consecutive audit. He has lost count of the billions. Last year, only 13 senators voted against the Military Industrial Complex and a defense budget full of waste and fraud. “That must change.”
Elon Musk is right.
The Pentagon, with a budget of $886 billion, just failed its 7th audit in a row. It’s lost track of billions.
Last year, only 13 senators voted against the Military Industrial Complex and a defense budget full of waste and fraud.
That must change.

By the way, Musk responded to the post with American flag emojis and wrote in a separate post: “Maybe we can find some common ground.”
On the other hand, Musk’s American political action committee stated: “Sensible spending is not a partisan issue. “The general public supports DOGE forcing the government to spend taxpayer money more wisely.”
The future in Congress: Several define the agenda
Incidentally, former Florida Republican congressman Matt Gaetz reacted to the publication by writing: “Welcome home, Bernie.” Similarly, left-wing media presenter Cenk Uygur intervened: “I asked to be put in charge of this project. But I’m happy to hand over the seat to Bernie Sanders. Imagine if Trump put Bernie in charge of keeping the Pentagon honest. “It would be the most spectacular act of bipartisanship of my life.”
Likewise, Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., suggested that Democrats are willing to work together to attack potentially wasteful spending, at least in the Defense Department. “When it comes to reducing waste, fraud and abuse and opening the Big 5 to more competition, there are Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee who will work with Elon Musk and DOGE.”
Likewise, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and Senator Joni Ernst, both Republicans, have led initiatives to support the Department. Greene will lead a subcommittee in the House of Representatives dedicated to working with DOGE, while Ernst will lead a bipartisan group in the Senate with the same goal.
I close with this quote from Elon Musk: “The government must stop wasting their hard-earned money!”
