In response to the devastating floods that hit the city of Valencia, Spain, Binance Charity has donated $3 million to the Spanish Red Cross.
According to Tuesday’s announcement, the Cryptocurrency exchange’s donation is intended to support immediate relief efforts and assist communities affected by the recent natural disaster. Binance Charity’s contribution will allow the Spanish Red Cross to mobilize essential resources for those affected.
“Thanks to your generosity and commitment, we are able to provide immediate assistance to the thousands of people affected, providing vital resources at this very difficult time,” said Fernando Pérez-Ordoyo, Head of International Partnerships at the Spanish Red Cross, in a statement.
This is not the first time the cryptocurrency community has provided disaster relief. In 2020, the Italian Red Cross also saw an influx of cryptocurrency donations at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Millions of dollars in cryptocurrency donations also flowed into Türkiye last year, after the country was devastated by earthquakes.
Binance has also provided disaster relief on other occasions in the past. Last month, the exchange announced an airdrop of $1.5 million in BNB to Binance users located in areas of Central Europe most affected by recent flooding. In 2022, the exchange also donated $10 million to humanitarian projects in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of the country.
Javier García de la Torre, CEO of Binance in Spain, said in a statement that the company is “committed to leveraging our resources to provide critical support during these challenging times.”
“Through our donation to the Spanish Red Cross, our goal is to bring relief and assistance to the people who need it most. We stand in solidarity with the community in Valencia, committed to helping in the reconstruction and recovery,” he added.
The Spanish city of Barcelona experienced flooding on Monday, following severe flooding in the Valencia region last week. Spain’s state weather agency placed parts of Catalonia on red alert for torrential rain, with local media showing images of cars partially submerged on highways.
Portions of Barcelona’s El Prat airport, the country’s second largest, were flooded, leading to more than 80 flight cancellations or delays along with the suspension of rail services.
A similar weather event hit the Valencia region last week, resulting in at least 217 deaths. On Monday, rescue teams focused on searching for missing people in underground parking lots.
