The arrest of Pavel Durov continues to create a huge media stir, with figures such as Elon Musk continuing to highlight the fact.
For this reason, Musk recently responded to a post suggesting he reconsider his travels. The tycoon indicated that he might in fact limit himself to traveling only to those countries where freedom of expression is constitutionally protected.
Musk is the owner of X, formerly Twitter, which is widely known for being a social network full of controversies, debates, political and ideological discussions and also misinformation.
But Elon Musk’s concerns express that he sees X in a similar situation to Telegram.
Probably wise for me to limit movements to countries where free speech is constitutionally protected

“It is probably prudent for me to limit my movements to countries where freedom of expression is constitutionally protected.”
Beyond a simple comparison, it is worth noting that since Elon Musk acquired X in 2022, he has faced great global criticism due to the spread of misinformation.
Moreover, like Durov, he has been criticised for a lack of content moderation policies and for the fact that the platform lends itself to the dissemination of fake news.
A clear example of this is the avalanche of disinformation surrounding the US elections. Although it is not a new phenomenon, it shows how social platforms facilitate the work of disinformation.
Elon Musk: Dangerous Times
Let us recall that Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested on August 24 near Paris on charges related to illegal activities. Since then, Elon Musk, who condemned the arrest, has been calling it a violation of freedom of expression. He also described it as “dangerous times.”
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has called the allegations that the arrest was politically motivated (specifically, related to the current war between Russia and Ukraine) “false information.”
However, public opinion tends to lean towards this motivation and also towards the idea that the European Union is experiencing great frustration and lack of determination in tackling this problem.
Is Elon Musk really in danger?
Social network X is facing a lot of scrutiny worldwide for spreading disinformation. Although it is not the only platform accused of this, it is rather a rather complex phenomenon to address.
However, Elon Musk has been a strong critic of several governments such as the Venezuelan and Brazilian ones. In addition, he is currently involved in a legal dispute in Brazil, which even threatens to suspend X in Brazilian territory for not blocking accounts accused of disinformation.
But beyond that, if such travel restrictions materialise, they could signal a major shift in the way CEOs of big tech companies navigate the complex landscape of international law and freedom of expression.
It is also worth highlighting that in the midst of this complex political landscape, social platforms become a key factor for governments in geopolitical disputes, which can make them an easy target.
