Japan has decided to revitalize its semiconductor industry, a strategic sector in the global economy. The Japanese government has unlocked million-dollar subsidies to strengthen its national chip industry, with the aim of competing internationally.
Ken Kuo, senior vice president of research at TrendForce, noted: “Subsidies are just a basic requirement for entering the semiconductor industry, but success depends on key factors such as talent, technology and solid strategic planning.”
For his part, Minister Shigeru Ishiba highlighted: “We will design a new support framework to attract more than 50 trillion yen in public and private investment over the next 10 years.”
A central player in this strategy is Rapidus, a startup backed by the Japanese government, considered essential for the reactivation of the industry. Founded in 2022, Rapidus is supported by Japanese companies such as Toyota Motor and Sony Group, in addition to collaborating closely with IBM for the development of advanced chips.
An ambitious plan to lead in technology
As reported by the Nikkei newspaper, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry presented lawmakers with a draft detailing the injection of 200 billion yen (approximately $1.28 billion) into Rapidus. This amount, part of a broader effort, will be disbursed in April 2025 to boost commercial chip production towards 2027.
Tetsuro Higashi, president of Rapidus, said the company represents “Japan’s last chance” to regain its position as a global leader in the semiconductor sector.
However, it will not be an easy task. Brady Wang, an analyst at Counterpoint Analysis, warned that Japan will face major challenges to regain ground in this market: “Rapidus will need to find a shortcut in chip design and production if it wants to reach the level of the leading semiconductor companies.”
With this initiative, Japan is betting on rebuilding its competitiveness in an industry dominated by global technology giants, demonstrating that the country still has the ambition to be a key player in the future of microchips.
I close with this quote from Eric Schmidt: “The next revolution will be driven by Artificial Intelligence, and semiconductors will be the fuel that powers it.”
