OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence company, is at the center of controversy after the leak of its new video generation tool, Sora, on the Hugging Face platform. This model, designed to transform text into videos, raised concerns among artists and creatives about its potential impact on the industry.
The leak and criticism of the artists
The leak briefly allowed external users to access Sora’s API, prompting a group of artists to express their discontent through a public letter on the same platform. In the statement, the creatives accused OpenAI of taking advantage of the unpaid work of hundreds of artists during initial testing of the tool, known as redteaming.
The group, which calls itself “PR Puppets,” noted that the early access program seemed more geared toward marketing than true creative expression and critical analysis. They also denounced the lack of adequate compensation for the artists who participated in the tests, who could only compete to exhibit their works made with Sora.
OpenAI’s response
OpenAI defended its program, arguing that participation was voluntary and there was no obligation to provide feedback. However, following the leak, the company temporarily suspended early access while it evaluates new security measures and model improvements.
The company claimed to be committed to balancing creativity and safety before releasing Sora to the public. According to Kevin Weil, product manager at OpenAI, the delay in the official release of the model is due to the need to refine key aspects, such as the security and scalability of the tool.
Impact on the creative industry
Sora’s arrival highlights tensions between the innovative possibilities of artificial intelligence and concerns about its impact on creative jobs.
The model has generated interest in Hollywood, but also alarm among more than 11,000 creative sector professionals, who recently signed an open letter denouncing generative AI tools as an unfair threat to their livelihoods.
The future of Sora and creative AI
Despite the criticism, Sora represents a significant advance in the ability of AI models to generate visual content. However, its success will depend on how OpenAI manages security, ethics and fair compensation concerns, especially at a time when the creative industry struggles to adapt to this new technological reality.
With Sora still in development, the debate over the ethical use of artificial intelligence in the arts promises to intensify in the coming months.
