Flickplay, an NFT interactive character platform, has teamed up with Bandai Namco Entertainment—one of its investors—to launch a Pokémon Go-style scavenger hunt to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the classic arcade game, Pac-Man.
Set to debut in February 2025, the partnership will begin with the release of two series of exclusive Pac-Man collectible digital “toys.” One series will only be available to those in the Japanese neighborhood where Pac-Man was first seen in 1980, Shibuya.
Flickplay is a platform full of character NFTs that can be imported into games. For example, the platform launched a collection of Bratz Dolls earlier this year. These “Digi-Dolls” can be used in Flickplay experiences, such as creating GIFs and Tamagotchi-style character widgets, and have since been integrated into the Ethereum metaverse game The Sandbox as playable characters.
The first Pac-Man collection is planned to be released during the four-day DIG Shibuya Festival in Japan, as part of a location-based event similar to Pokémon Go. The treasure hunt will take place from February 8 to 11 at more than 40 locations in Shibuya City. Collectibles will be in limited supply, so completing the quest quickly is crucial.
Once the Pokémon Go-style event begins, Flickplay will announce specific locations in Shibuya City for players to visit. Once within a pre-designed radius of the location, fans will have the opportunity to exchange Diamonds—Flickplay’s in-app currency, awarded through an Experience Pass—for digital Pac-Man collectibles.
The second collection will not be limited to those in a particular location, opening it up to a global audience through the Flickplay store. More details and dates have not yet been announced.
Interested parties will be able to purchase an Experience Pass, as part of a pre-sale. This will give users enough Flickplay in-app currency to unlock the entire Pac-Man collection in Shibuya City. Additionally, users will receive a digital Pac-Man collectible immediately without any effort required.
On top of all this, Flickplay claims that participants in the event will receive a “Mysterious Super Rare” item.
Flickplay currently supports Flow, Ethereum, and Polygon, but the platform is currently in discussions with other Ethereum layer 2 networks to expand the project’s interoperability.
“Looking ahead, it is in our plan for 2025 to make the experience of seamlessly bringing digital toys from one ecosystem to another accessible to everyday consumers,” Pierina Merino, founder and CEO of Flickplay, told Decrypt.
At the time of writing, Flickplay has not yet decided which chain the Pac-Man NFTs will be deployed on. For now, there are no confirmed game integrations for Pac-Man collectible toys, but the company is looking for ways to give owners more utility.
“We are actively looking for big games where we could test deeper interoperability with our characters as a step towards introducing a broader ecosystem approach,” Merino concluded.
