Russian billionaire Pavel Durov will spend another 96 hours in detention, according to information from French authorities gathered by The New York Times. The tech entrepreneur was arrested by authorities in the European country on Saturday on multiple charges against him.
It should be noted that the detention period in France is 24 hours and can be extended for another 96 hours depending on the charges. In this regard, the authorities are working counterclockwise to determine Durov’s connection with crimes that occur on Telegram.
Pavel Durov’s detention is extended
According to the news portal, the founder of Telegram will remain in custody until the authorities determine otherwise. The maximum period is 96 hours. If they are unable to determine who is responsible in that time, they will probably be forced to release him.
As reported by this media, the Russian businessman was arrested last Saturday when he got off his private jet in Paris. After some local officials, who did not identify themselves, leaked the information of the arrest, the reaction was immediate. Important leaders of the technology industry immediately came out to protest against the arrest.
Although the attack on social media and other platforms is constant in the EU, it has never gone so far. In that sense, Durov’s arrest sets a precedent that some tech magnates could use as a warning. Among them, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and others stand out. Their companies are constantly accused of violating various laws and are required to submit to moderation, just as Telegram is required to do.
This climate makes the decision to prolong Pavel Durov’s detention show that the Europeans mean business.
I have seen false information regarding France following the arrest of Pavel Durov.
France is deeply committed to freedom of expression and communication, to innovation, and to the spirit of entrepreneurship. It will remain so.
In a state governed by the rule of law,…

French President speaks out on the case
French President Emmanuel Macron has felt the pressure following the tech entrepreneur’s arrest. In a social media post, the French leader reacted to accusations that the arrest makes France an enemy of freedom of expression.
“France is deeply committed to freedom of expression and communication, to innovation and to entrepreneurship. And it will remain that way,” Macron said. However, he added that laws must be enforced to protect people’s interests.
It is worth mentioning that the arrest of a technology entrepreneur could compromise the security of investing in innovation in France. Hence, the incident precipitated a statement from the country’s president himself. Likewise, Macron dismisses the arrest as politically motivated.
Russian authorities claim that Durov’s arrest is a form of revenge for Paris’s hostility towards Moscow. Kremlin officials have recently denounced France’s lack of interest in cooperating in the case and its refusal to grant the businessman consular treatment.
Durov had an arrest warrant for numerous charges including drug trafficking, money laundering, promoting terrorism and others.
