Prominent Solana-based token launch platform Pump.fun announced on Monday that it has “paused” the live streaming feature on its platform, which allowed users to stream a live video along with creating their memecoins.
Tokens that used the live streaming feature can no longer be found in a category using the dropdown menu on the Pump.fun home page, and no longer have a video embedded on their respective Pump.fun pages. After the feature disappeared, the company confirmed that it was removed in the interest of public safety.
“To ensure the absolute safety of our users, we will be pausing live streaming functionality on the site for an indefinite period of time until the moderation infrastructure is ready to handle the elevated levels of activity,” the Pump.fun team said. in a statement.
The feature had created considerable controversy and concern across the crypto community, with many users calling for the feature to be shut down in recent days as the live-streamed content ranged from animal cruelty to self-harm proposals. Some prominent figures in the space suggested they would no longer use the platform if the feature remained.
The Pump.fun co-founder, known as Alon, previously addressed “legitimate concerns” about livestreaming content on Nov. 22, alerting the community via Twitter (X) that “while we strongly defend freedom of expression “It is our responsibility to ensure that users do not see clearly repulsive/dangerous content and that malicious actors do not have a platform to act as they wish.”
The platform uses a content moderation team to moderate illicit content on the site, including “images, videos, live streams and comments.”
Pump.fun previously came under fire following the launch of its video feature, which allowed users to create a meme coin using a video or GIF file.
Pump.fun is the largest token launch platform on Solana, with an average creation of over 50,000 coins daily in the last week. It has helped fuel the memecoin surge throughout 2024, with multiple tokens on the platform briefly reaching the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market cap.
