Hamster Kombat, the leading tap-to-earn game on Telegram, announced on Wednesday via its official channel that it will launch its long-awaited HMSTR token on The Open Network (TON) on September 26 and distribute the airdrop to its players on the same date.
The token was originally scheduled to launch in July but was delayed due to the need for additional planning for a large-scale airdrop. Hamster Kombat has attracted more than 300 million players since its launch this spring, the team claimed in July, and Telegram data shows more than 80 million active players in the past month.
Hamster Kombat is a tap-to-win game that builds on the core experience of tapping the screen to get coins, popularized on Telegram by Notcoin earlier this year. Notcoin established the format and attracted 35 million players before launching the largest gaming token to date.
But the anonymous team behind Hamster Kombat, which developed a simulation of a hamster CEO of a Cryptocurrency exchange, has managed to amass a much larger audience and increased hype around the upcoming launch of its token, which will reward players.
Wednesday’s airdrop announcement comes just hours after The Open Network went offline for hours following significant network congestion on Tuesday. A TON representative confirmed to Decrypt that the issues were related to the token launch of a project called DOGS, but that the network is now operating normally.
