In a week in which Sotheby’s auction house sold a work by Claude Monet valued at $65 million, a peculiar banana taped to a wall, created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, captured all the attention.
This Wednesday, at Sotheby’s, seven bidders competed to acquire the work of art titled “Comedian.” After several minutes of bidding, the initial price of $800,000 skyrocketed to a final price of $5.2 million, which with taxes and commissions reached $6.2 million dollars.
Shortly after the sale, Justin Sun, founder of the TRON Network (TRX) Blockchain, confirmed to be the buyer. Through a statement from Sotheby’s and on the social network X, Sun expressed his enthusiasm:
«I’m Justin Sun and I’m excited to share that I have successfully acquired Maurizio Cattelan’s iconic work, Comedian, for $6.2 million. “This is not just a work of art, it represents a cultural phenomenon that unites the worlds of art, memes and the Cryptocurrency community.”
The crypto entrepreneur also announced that he plans to eat the banana in the coming days as part of a “unique artistic experience,” highlighting the work’s impact on art history and popular culture.
«I believe this piece will inspire more thought and debate in the future and become part of history. “I am honored to be the proud owner of the banana and hope it creates more inspiration and impact for art enthusiasts around the world,” he added.

Justin Sun and the most controversial art investment: a $6.2 million banana
Although Justin Sun plans to eat the artwork, that doesn’t mean his investment is in vain. As part of the purchase, the TRON founder will receive a roll of duct tape, a banana, and a certificate of authenticity issued by Sotheby’s.
Additionally, Sun will get a 14-page manual with detailed instructions to keep the work in perfect condition. This manual specifies the correct orientation of the banana, the appropriate height to stick it and how to avoid incorrect positions.
The work “Comedian” is not Cattelan’s only controversial creation. In 2016, his wax figure of a kneeling Adolf Hitler, titled “Him,” with real human hair, sold for $17.2 million at a Christie’s auction.
On the other hand, Sun might reconsider his decision to eat the banana. In a recent post on
“I’m willing to donate my banana to Elon Musk, stick it to the body of a SpaceX rocket and send it to Mars or the Moon,” Sun said.
It should be noted that if Sun finally keeps his promise to eat the banana, it will not be the first case. In 2019, during his debut at Art Basel Miami, artist David Datuna ate the same work after it sold for $120,000, generating a stir in the art community.
