Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is developing a measuring stick of sorts to assess how aligned projects are with Ethereum’s core principles.
In his September 28 blog post, Vitalik Buterin argues that achieving this alignment is one of the most important challenges in ensuring a prosperous and cohesive future for the Ethereum ecosystem.
In this regard, he said: “The main challenge is ensuring that all of these projects, together, build something that feels like a single Ethereum ecosystem and not 138 incompatible fiefdoms.”
Alignment, the great challenge of Ethereum: Buterin proposes a solution
In his article titled “How to Make Ethereum Alignment Readable,” Vitalik Buterin addresses the challenge of balancing Ethereum customer teams, researchers, application developers, and local community groups to ensure a unified Ethereum ecosystem.
According to Vitalik Buterin, to achieve “Ethereum Alignment” it is essential that ETH adheres to key principles such as open source, decentralization, and support for public goods. Jointly, he proposes that ETH become the reference token within the ecosystem, whenever possible.
Buterin proposes metrics for clearer alignment
However, according to Buterin, the concept has historically been poorly defined, and this creates the risk of social stratum capture (when a small group manages to dominate and control the conversation and decisions of a larger community): “If “Alignment means having the right friends, so alignment as a concept has failed.”
To solve this, Buterin proposes that: “The concept of alignment should be made more readable, decomposing it into specific properties, which can be represented by specific metrics. Everyone’s list will be different, and metrics will inevitably change over time. However, I think we already have some solid starting points.”
- Open source. It guarantees the transparency necessary to secure the network and promotes decentralization. Avoiding dependence on a single supplier and allowing the collaboration of the entire community.
- Open standards. Work hand in hand with the Ethereum community to develop solutions based on common standards. Ensuring compatibility and interoperability between different projects.
- Decentralization and security. Avoid trust points, reduce censorship vulnerabilities and minimize dependence on centralized infrastructure.
- positive sum. The success of the project should benefit the entire Ethereum community.
- Towards a wider world. Ethereum is here to make the world a freer and more open place, enable new forms of ownership and collaboration, and contribute positively to important challenges facing humanity.
Now, according to Vitalik Buterin, it is important to recognize that alignment metrics vary significantly depending on the type of project. What works for a layer 2 solution doesn’t exactly apply to a wallet or a decentralized social media application. Let’s remember that priorities evolve over time.
In closing, Buterin highlighted the importance of Ethereum maintaining credible neutrality, warning that if alignment simply means having the right connections, the concept of alignment would fail. The big question is: Will Ethereum be able to maintain cohesion as it grows and diversifies, or will it become a collection of disconnected projects? Leave your opinion in the comment box.
I say goodbye with this phrase from Vitalik Buterin: “Decentralization is a process, not a final state.”
