- Changpeng “CZ” Zhao would not reject a pardon from Joe Biden, but clarified that he has no intention of returning as CEO of Binance.
- After being convicted last year, CZ turned to investing in artificial intelligence after his resignation as CEO and the ban on Binance.
- Most of CZ’s followers are calling for Donald Trump to pardon him, due to his pro-crypto stance, while he joked about the pardon on social media.
Former Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao says he would not refuse to be pardoned by US President Joe Biden, despite not wanting to return as CEO of the Cryptocurrency exchange.
CZ pleaded guilty to money laundering charges last year, agreeing to resign as CEO and receiving a lifetime ban from “managing or operating” Binance. He was then released from a 4-month prison sentence in September and has since dedicated himself to becoming an investor in artificial intelligence (AI).
In the US, the President can pardon individuals convicted of crimes in what is called a ‘pardon’. This effectively erases the punishment from the person’s record, meaning that in this case CZ could return as CEO of Binance.
On Sunday, President Joe Biden “forgave” his son, Hunter Biden. Earlier this year, he pleaded guilty to tax and weapons charges and has been awaiting sentencing. In response, people began discussing the possibility of CZ being forgiven as well.
“President Donald Trump should consider pardoning CZ so he can return to being CEO of Binance and help the cryptocurrency industry mature,” John Lilic, co-founder of centralized exchange TelosX, wrote on Twitter. “He is also a victim of legal warfare.”
“(I have) no intention of being CEO again,” CZ responded. “But (I wouldn’t) mind a pardon.”
In response to the news of Biden’s pardon for his son, CZ jokingly retweeted the message with an eyes emoji. Replies to the former CEO’s tweet are flooded with people claiming that he should be the next one to be pardoned. CZ responded laughing.
Most people are looking for Donald Trump to pardon the cryptocurrency founder, rather than Joe Biden. This is due to the Republican’s pro-cryptocurrency stance that promises to revolutionize the industry.
Trump promised to end the “cryptocurrency crackdown,” replacing it with friendlier regulation, in addition to creating a strategic Bitcoin reserve and dominating the Bitcoin Mining industry.
Before securing his re-election, Republican candidate Donald Trump promised to pardon Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, who is currently in his 12th year in prison, through a post on Truth Social—some cryptocurrency enthusiasts saw this as a positive movement, while others were more skeptical. But pardoning CZ will probably be a more popular cryptocurrency-related pardon move for Trump to start with.
