Revolution in digital identity: Worldcoin, the project that promises a new era of digital identity, now requires its users to use an unconventional currency: their face. With Face Auth, privacy becomes the biggest question mark.
Specifically, according to a new post from Worldcoin via its official blog, it is testing a new facial recognition feature called Face Auth on its World app. This feature will initially be tested in select locations, but is expected to reach more people in the coming weeks. And it is described as a private 1:1 facial comparison, ensuring that only people who have verified their World ID on the Orb can access the World app.
By the way, according to the organization, nearly 15 million people are currently using the World App digital wallet globally, and around 6.7 million users have formally verified their “identity” using Worldcoin’s iris scanning orbs.
Selfie and done! Worldcoin simplifies identity verification with facial recognition
Essentially, this measure aims to improve the security of users who use the app for tools such as “online shopping, financial transactions, secure login applications and much more.”
In fact, World App uses cutting-edge technology to compare your selfie with the image stored on the Orb. An algorithm will analyze your facial features to instantly verify your identity.
Specifically, Face Auth will compare selfies taken on the user’s phone with images captured on the Orb at the time of registration, with the latter being stored securely on the mobile device.
In this regard, Worldcoin explains: “The entire process takes place locally on the device, so the new layer of security also puts verified World ID holders in control of their personal information (including the selfie) by storing it only on their phone, encrypted with their key.”
How will Face Auth work?
However, despite Worldcoin’s emphasis on privacy and limited use of biometric data, it has raised concerns among government authorities focused on data protection.
Finally, are we willing to sacrifice privacy for the convenience of instant verification? Leave your thoughts in the comments box.
I close with this quote from George Orwell: “He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.”
