This Thursday, it was learned that Australian computer engineer, Craig Wright, received an exemplary prison sentence for contempt of court. The penalty is one year in jail with two years suspended. This means that if you commit a new crime in the next 24 months, imprisonment will be applied against you.
In this way, the Cryptocurrency expert would have committed crimes classified in the British judicial system. Apart from contempt of court, he is also accused of lying and making unjustified demands. As part of the reparation for the damages committed, the engineer must pay a fine of ₤145,000 pounds sterling, as reported by The Guardian.
Wright is a legend in the world of cryptocurrencies, but not exactly in the positive sense. For years, the computer scientist declared himself as the person behind Bitcoin. In his claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the expert sued dozens of companies and personalities for alleged copyright.
However, Craig Wright and his team were never able to prove that he was the creator of Bitcoin, which is why he received the recent sentence. It is worth remembering that a few months ago a court decreed that the Australian was indeed not the mysterious creator of the largest cryptocurrency.
Craig Wright wanted to destroy Jack Dorsey’s firm
According to the aforementioned reports, the sentence against the falsely self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto occurs for contempt and proceeding with a new lawsuit. This time, the engineer intended to bring the Block firm of Twitter founder, (now X) Jack Dorsey, to the dock.
In the lawsuit against Block, the computer scientist alleged violation of intellectual property rights related to the Bitcoin system. Thus, his intention was for the firm to pay him compensation with the absurd figure of ₤911 billion pounds. As expected, the court dismissed this case.
This seems to close a new page in the history of the crypto market. Although Wright’s statements can be taken as a joke, and in fact that happens on social networks, they caused enormous damage to the crypto industry. The problem is not that the engineer really believed himself to be Nakamoto, but that he acted and damaged numerous companies.
Their lawsuits caused huge losses to the cryptocurrency world in legal fees. The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) was a key player in Wright’s defeat. They managed to get a court to freeze the computer scientist’s fortune ($8 million) to ensure that Craig Wright would not evade his financial responsibilities.
Now, this 54-year-old expert faces numerous problems as a result of his campaign of lies and smears. His reputation in the crypto sector is one of the most negative and is only surpassed by Peter Schiff, Gary Gensler and Elizabeth Warren. Even its BSV coin (Bitcoin Satoshi Vision) was withdrawn from several major exchanges.
