MicroStrategy, once the protagonist of the dotcom boom and bust, has reemerged with a strategy that fascinates and worries Wall Street in equal measure. Since August 2020, the company has taken a risky but profitable bet on Bitcoin, transforming itself from a software provider into the largest corporate accumulator of this Cryptocurrency.
In the last month, MicroStrategy announced a plan to raise $42 billion in capital, combining debt and equity sales, to acquire more Bitcoin.
Currently, it owns 386,700 bitcoins valued at $37 billion, while its market capitalization amounts to $89 billion. Their approach is guided by their “21/21 Plan,” which pays homage to the 21 million bitcoin limit and the number “42,” a reference to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
A masterstroke or a dangerous bet?
MicroStrategy’s strategy is based on an upward spiral: raising funds to buy Bitcoin, which drives the price of the cryptocurrency and, in turn, raises the value of its shares.
This allows for new rounds of funding to acquire more Bitcoin. However, critics warn that dependence on a rising Bitcoin price and constant investor interest could unravel the plan in the face of any instability.

While some celebrate company co-founder Michael Saylor as a visionary who has found the “El Dorado” of shareholder value, others point to legal and regulatory risks. Saylor’s public predictions, such as a $13 million price for Bitcoin in 2045, amplify both expectations and doubts.
