Retail investors are flocking to meme cryptocurrencies, with data from Reddit revealing PEPE (CRYPTO:PEPE) as the current favorite to capture retailers’ attention, according to a recent analysis of Cryptocurrency subreddit growth trends.
What happened
The analysis, shared in a detailed thread on x on December 5, highlights the importance of understanding the psychology of the retail investor in the current market cycle.
The thread argues that retail investors are driven by factors such as financial nihilism, the appeal of high-risk, high-reward opportunities, and the ease of access offered by platforms like Robinhood. The author states: “They see cryptocurrencies as a way to ‘get rich quick’.”
The analysis focused on subreddit membership growth as a key indicator of retailer interest. PEPE and BONK (CRYPTO:BONK) emerged as the standouts, with PEPE showing particularly strong growth following its listing on Robinhood on November 13.
“PEPE’s subreddit growth was parabolic following its November 13 listing on Robinhood, outpacing the subreddit growth of any other meme cryptocurrency,” the author observed.

The data also revealed the persistent influence of unit bias among retail investors. “Retailers are attracted to tokens with low per unit prices,” the analysis noted, and investors often boast about owning large amounts of tokens rather than focusing on the dollar value of their holdings.
The PEPE subreddit has become the most active among meme cryptocurrencies this cycle, driven by its ambitious price targets.
“This has been fueled by the Subreddit trending narrative of ‘PEPE for $1’, a 46,000x win. Although obviously unattainable, this lunar narrative mirrors those that propelled DOGE and SHIB to massive heights,” the author explained.
The analysis concludes that if these Reddit trends continue, subreddit data could serve as a valuable indicator of retailer interest in cryptocurrencies. For now, PEPE appears to be the clear favorite among retail investors, with the potential to continue growing as the Ethereum ecosystem gains momentum.
The author also points out that dogwifhat (CRYPTO:WIF) – Lags behind Pepe and Bonk despite listing on Robinhood on November 25.
In the same way, Shiba Inu (CRYPTO:SHIB) has seen slower subreddit growth compared to its historical performance.
What’s next
The analysis concludes that if these Reddit trends continue, subreddit data could serve as a valuable indicator of retailer interest in cryptocurrencies.
For now, PEPE appears to be the clear favorite among retail investors, with the potential for further growth as the Ethereum ecosystem gains momentum.
